WAC 174 AIDS Performance Team

The Teachers: South African performance artist and HIV activist Pieter-Dirk Uys and World Arts and Cultures Professor David Gere.

The Class: Two-week performance residency learning techniques honed by Uys in his anti-apartheid and
anti-AIDS theater works: satire, humor, truth-telling, and improvisation. Students will plan, write, and perform pieces that intervene in the AIDS epidemic. Workshop themes include: If its banned, play it; Doing a tango in front of a firing squad; Love your enemy, it will ruin his reputation; and more. The final performance for the residency will take place on World AIDS Day (Dec. 1.) In addition, students are encouraged to continue performing on and off-campus through the academic year.
