"I Am" Poem

Students from North Carolina Central University share a powerful declaration of self through a poem.

For all videos:

  • What stood out to you the most from this video?

For this video:

  • What makes you feel very proud about your family, community, culture?
  • Is there anything about your family, community, culture that you don’t like? What changes would you like to see?

Materials needed: scratch paper, letter size colored paper, markers

Step 1.

Tell students that they will write their own “I Am” Poem. Have them write a draft on a scratch sheet of paper by following the format below. Walk around to assist them with words, adjectives, spelling, and grammar. Once they’ve finished their draft and you’ve approved, students should write their poem, with large, neat letters on a blank letter-size paper.

My name is ____.

My name is NOT ____.

Where I’m from, sex is ____.

Where I’m from, people say ____ about sex.

I think ____ is/are sexy.

____ break my heart.

My revolution is ____ and the final project will be ____.

Step 2.

After students are done writing their own poems, ask for volunteers to share to the class. Collect all poems at the end and post them around classroom for everyone to read and enjoy.
