Opportunities for students and educators

University Students

Internships

We offer internships year-round to qualifying students from UCLA and other higher education institutions.

Responsibilities are based on each individual’s particular skill sets and interests. We encourage interns to consider ways they can contribute to our projects in various capacities, including event planning and execution, administrative support, research and evaluation, outreach and marketing, peer education, and art-making. In Spring Quarter, the focus is working directly with high school students who come to UCLA to engage in a Sex Squad performance and take a tour of campus.

We require interns to work with us for a minimum of 5 hours per week. Interns can work up to a maximum of 10 hours per week. Schedules are determined on a case-by-case basis and can change throughout the year depending on personal circumstances.

Interns can join on a volunteer basis or earn UCLA course credit (2-4 units per quarter; junior or senior status required). Work study positions are available during Spring Quarter (financial aid grant is required).

No prior experience is required. We welcome and encourage students from all departments and backgrounds to apply. Given the nature of our work, all students receive basic sexual and reproductive health education.

During the academic year, all internships take place in person at our office in Kaufman Hall. Working on a hybrid or remote basis is only an option on a case-by-case basis.

UCLA Sex Squad Course Enrollment

We invite students from all departments to join Sex Squad in Winter and Spring Quarters.

For UCLA students, Sex Squad is a 2-quarter sequence of upper division courses in Winter & Spring Quarters. Students create and perform original theatrical material aimed at high school health students who are learning about sexual health education topics.

No prior experience is required. We welcome and encourage students from all departments and backgrounds to apply. Given the nature of our work, all students receive basic sexual and reproductive health education.

Sex Squad courses take place on Wednesdays and Fridays, 11 AM–1 PM, in Kaufman Hall during both Winter and Spring Quarters.

4 units are available in Winter Quarter and 4 units are available in Spring through the Department of World Arts and Cultures/Dance. Enrollment during both quarters is required. The courses fulfill requirements for the global health minor.

We have a video library, and check out our Instagram and TikTok.

UCLA Sex Squad Performances

From April to early June each year, the Sex Squad offers performances to high school students on campus at UCLA. We also offer condensed tours of UCLA’s campus which are specific to our program.

A Sex Squad performance is an original 30-minute theatrical variety show created by UCLA students which is meant to supplement state-mandated comprehensive sexual health education.

From April to early June each year, the Sex Squad performs on Wednesdays and Fridays, 11 AM-1 PM on campus at UCLA. Schools should plan to arrive at UCLA no later than 10:30 AM.

Topics include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Getting Tested
  • Safe(r) Sex
  • Body Autonomy
  • LGBTQ+ Identity
  • Communication
  • Consent
  • Sexual Assault
  • Hypermasculinity
  • Self-Empowerment
  • Pleasure & Enjoying Sex
  • Sexual Health Stigma
  • Mental Health

Because there’s a new cast and script every year, the performances will vary. In general, there’s a mix of humorous skits, heartfelt personal monologues, engaging music and dance pieces, and participatory audience engagement segments. Each show concludes with a peer-led Q&A discussion with the cast.

Yes! The Art & Global Health Center works in close partnership with the Los Angeles Unified School District HIV/AIDS Prevention Unit to ensure all performance content is medically accurate and age-appropriate for high school students. Our show is not approved for students below 9th grade.

Led by college student interns trained by the Art & Global Health Center, our tours offer a small glimpse into campus life at UCLA. Tours are customizable to the needs of your specific group of students. We are able to guide students around campus for up to 30 minutes before or after Sex Squad performances. We do not accompany students into the UCLA Store or Ackerman Student Union.

We can accommodate up to 180 students on any given day of performances. If you wish to bring more than 180 students total, you can register for multiple days.

Los Angeles Unified School District teachers must use iFieldTrip to schedule field trips to the UCLA campus. We do not have access to iFieldTrip and cannot do it on anyone’s behalf.

The Art & Global Health Center has a limited number of bus scholarships available. For more information, contact us at artglobalhealth@arts.ucla.edu.

No. Because Sex Squad’s cast is entirely made up of current UCLA students with very busy schedules, the performances must take place on campus.
