Prepare

Get ready to teach using tools provided in this section.

  • Teach students the difference between biological sex, gender, gender expression and sexual orientation. For help in understanding/distinguishing each of them, use these websites:
  1. https://www.genderbread.org/
  2. https://www.itspronouncedmetrosexual.com/2011/11/breaking-through-the-binary-gender-explained-using-continuums/
  • Print blank copies of the Genderbread diagram to give to each student to write on and help them understand the differences mentioned above.
  1. This version contains words/descriptions to use as a guide: https://www.genderbread.org/resource/genderbread-person-v1
  2. This version is blank for students to write on: https://www.genderbread.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/Genderbread-Person-v4.pdf
  • Students should know the meaning of LGBTQ-related terms such as: coming out, outing, heterosexual, gay, lesbian, bisexual, queer, pansexual, asexual, transgender, heterosexism, homophobia, resiliency and many other terms that you can find here: https://www.itspronouncedmetrosexual.com/2013/01/a-comprehensive-list-of-lgbtq-term-definitions/
  • Students should have had a discussion on the challenges faced by LGBTQ+ people (see statistics) as well as understand the history of LGBTQ+ activism and resiliency.
  • For the last video, show students short clips of the reality show House Hunters (can find on YouTube) so that they understand the parody.
